Good Post,Tom. It's especially timely as I see more spammy content infiltrating the Twittersphere. My personal favorite is "Be a Resource" If readers take away anything from your post, it should be that successful twitter folks are helpful resources to their communities.
Happy New Year, Tom!

Totally agree Joan. I see more spammy content as well, but the beauty of social media is the ability to ignore those individuals. They can only succeed if the Twitter community allows them to.

Tom, My B2B clients are each at different stages of engagement with social media. From disinterested to curious to "how quickly can we get started?" to fully functioning with both inbound and outbound programs.

What we are doing to help convince & convert (apologies to Jay Baer) them is to lead by example. I am encouraging everyone at MLT Creative to be active "digital citizens" (chapter 12 Inbound Marketing) and we're not just seeing results, we're tracking them.

I wish there was a better way to explain the weird mix of spam and snake oil so clients could completely avoid it but I think it's something you have to wade through and learn to filter out.

Great post and good advice as usual Tom. Thanks!

Billy, thanks for the positive feedback and your comments about snake oil salesmen are so true. An experienced Tweeter ca usually spot the spammy self-promoters almost instantly. That's one benefit (of many) a consultant can bring to a b2b client new to Twitter, until the client has enough experience to do this on their own.
Right, bmitchell, At every stage of business twitter is too useful!
